Measure, cut and shape wood, plastic, fiberglass and drywall. Specialize in many different kinds of construction: private homes and commercial buildings, highways and bridges, skyscrapers and power plants. Carpenters understand how math, geometry, and physics are important for construction, and often weave art and design into their work as well!

A Typical Day

  • Study specifications in blueprints, sketches, or building plans to prepare project layout and determine dimensions and materials required.
  • Measure and mark cutting lines on materials.
  • Shape or cut materials to specified measurements, using hand tools, machines, or power saws.
  • Install structures or fixtures, such as windows, frames, floorings, trim, or hardware, using carpenters' hand or power tools.
  • Build or repair cabinets, doors, frameworks, floors, or other wooden fixtures used in buildings.
  • Remove damaged or defective parts or sections of structures and repair or replace.
